MOUNTAIN VIEW — An envelope containing a mysterious substance spurred the evacuation of a Google building in Mountain View on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Authorities raced to the site on the 2600 block of Casey Avenue about 3 p.m. after employees reported receiving an envelope that appeared to contain an unknown white substance.

“Out of an abundance of caution, crews evacuated the building,” Mountain View police said in a news release.

No injuries were reported among the 70 or so employees.

A Mountain View Fire Department hazmat team tested the substance and determined it was not dangerous. The building was deemed safe to re-enter, and employees returned to work.

Additional testing confirmed the substance was harmless, but it wasn’t immediately clear what it was.

“Mountain View police will be working with federal investigators to follow up on the incident,” the release said.
