SAN JOSE — A tech company’s promising efforts to create advanced materials that can be used in batteries and other devices has fueled a burst of hiring and expansion in north San Jose’s Alviso district.
Lyten, a privately held company that was founded in 2015, is hoping that its materials can unleash breakthroughs in devices that can be used in electric vehicles, the aerospace sector and military applications.
The company has created a lithium-sulfur battery that can use cheaper materials as a substitute for batteries that use relatively costly materials such as metal oxide, cobalt, manganese, or nickel.
“Our lithium-sulfur batteries will provide a lightweight and high-energy-density solution for electric vehicle batteries without using expensive nickel or cobalt resources and will be more environmentally sustainable,” Dan Cook, Lyten’s chief executive office and co-founder, said in comments emailed to this news organization.
Lyten’s most recent space expansion led to the company leasing a building located at 110 Baytech Drive in San Jose that totals about 58,000 square feet.
The 110 Baytech building’s owner, an affiliate headed up by real estate entrepreneur Nariman Teymourian, said the company’s growth has provided a big boost for his property.
“Lyten leased our building because they are really growing,” Teymourian said. “They now have two buildings near each other, our building and the corporate headquarters.”
The company’s head offices are across the street at 145 Baytech Drive in a building that totals 54,900 square feet.
“We are growing and we are in hiring mode,” a Lyten company executive said. “Very much so.”
Lyten at present has about 200 employees in San Jose and is adding to that number swiftly, the executive said.
“We are very excited to have a tenant that is growing like this,” Teymourian said.
