FREMONT — Kaiser Permanente plans to open a temporary vaccination clinic near a major shopping center in Fremont to help increase the number of people it can inoculate against COVID-19, according to city reports.
Fremont’s zoning administrator on Feb. 9 gave Kaiser an emergency permit to open a vaccination clinic at a satellite facility it owns at 43971 Boscell Rd., near Fremont’s Auto Mall and Pacific Commons Shopping Center.
City reports say Kaiser plans to run the clinic in its 7,865-square foot facility seven days a week, beginning in “mid-February,” with the aim of vaccinating nearly 100 people per hour, “based on available dosages.”
The temporary use green-lit by the city would last for about a year, and the city’s zoning administrator can extend the authorization if needed.
Kaiser will have a staff of 12 people at the facility to attend to patients, including at least one medical doctor, city reports said. The clinic would be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on weekends.
A Kaiser spokesperson wasn’t immediately able to comment for this story Thursday evening.
As of Wednesday night, Kaiser’s vaccine website said the healthcare provider has issued 261,541 total doses of the vaccine. Kaiser is currently vaccinating healthcare workers, long-term care patients and staff, and people age 75 and older.
Kaiser applied for the permit in January, and the city fast-tracked the approval due to the “speed andefficiency” required to help combat the virus.
Fremont reports said the normal approval process for consideration of a permit like the one given to Kaiser “could take several months, time that cannot be afforded in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.”
