If you’ve ever rented an electric scooter to get around town and thought you’d like to own your own pair of wheels, scooter operator Bird is willing to make that a reality.
Bird on Wednesday unveiled its new Bird One scooter, which in addition to joining the company’s fleet of rentals, is available to purchase — for $1,299. Bird said the Bird One is part of its plan to offer more commercial-grade scooters that have a longer street life than its consumer-level vehicles.
The Bird One will come in three colors, jet black, dove white and electric rose, and is capable of running up to 30 miles on a fully charged battery. The company said the Bird One is designed to last for a year as a rental scooter, compared to the 10-month lifespan of Bird’s current Bird Zero model.
With regards to the rest of its scooter line, Bird said it will phase out scooters designed for the retail consumer market, offer the Xiaomi M365 scooter for monthly personal rentals and will no longer purchase Ninebot ES scooters.
But anyone interested in purchasing a Bird One will need to move quickly, as the company said in statement that only a “limited supply” of the scooters will be available for sale, and deliveries will be made this summer. Buyers will also get $100 in credits for use with Bird’s fleet of shared scooters.
