Prime Video Locks in 12 Years of Canadian Hockey Losses

Amazon's streaming division doubles down on sports rights at precisely the moment cable is collapsing.

Prime Video and Rogers Communications have entered into a 12-year sublicensing agreement that hands Amazon's streaming platform exclusive rights to Wednesday Night Hockey and select early-round Stanley Cup Playoff broadcasts in Canada, in both English and French. This is the kind of commitment that makes venture capitalists weep into their spreadsheets and makes cable executives sleep better at night knowing someone else is absorbing the long-term risk. A dozen years is an eternity in streaming, which is to say it's roughly three business cycles, two management shakeups, and one complete rebranding of Prime Video's content strategy away.

Let us be clear about what Prime Video actually is: a loss-leading ancillary feature bundled into Amazon Prime memberships that serves primarily to justify the annual $139 subscription fee in Canada. It is not Netflix. It is not a standalone streaming empire with theatrical ambitions. It is a tax-advantaged content spend that allows Amazon to avoid discussing how much of their cloud computing margins are actually paying for shows nobody asked for. The platform's hockey strategy essentially boils down to this: convince Canadian subscribers that they need Prime membership because Wednesday nights matter, while quietly accepting that Canadian hockey fans will absolutely still pay Rogers separately for the same content on traditional broadcast.

This is not Amazon's first rodeo with sports content, nor is it their first rodeo with regretting sports content. The company has spent years acquiring Thursday Night Football rights in the United States, a decision that has been described by industry analysts with the kind of diplomatic language usually reserved for terminal diagnoses. The difference is that Thursday Night Football reaches 330 million Americans; Wednesday Night Hockey reaches a Canadian market of 39 million people, many of whom already own cable packages that include the games elsewhere. Amazon appears to have learned nothing and forgotten everything.

The press releases, naturally, sing the praises of "long-term partnership,
