Crusoe, by contrast, operates in a category so new and so laden with marketing jargon that the business itself appears to be made of the same vapor as its valuation.
Crusoe builds data centers and "small modular AI factories"—a phrase so perfectly engineered for PowerPoint that it deserves its own venture capital firm. The company positions itself as an infrastructure play for artificial intelligence compute, capitalizing on genuine demand from model trainers and inference workloads. What the press release does not volunteer: how much actual revenue Crusoe generates relative to a $30.9 billion valuation, how much of that revenue is locked into long-term contracts, or whether the company has achieved profitability at any stage of operations. In the absence of disclosed financials, we are invited to assume that "AI factory" is both a product category and a business model.
The infrastructure-as-hype cycle is not new to venture capital, but it has rarely been executed with such brazen confidence. Data centers are physical assets with measurable costs: land, power, cooling, labor, maintenance. They are not software. They are not network effects.
